This grant is the largestsingle corporate contribution ever awardedto the Brooklyn Academy of Music or tocontemporary programming.In announcing the grant, Hamish Maxwell, Chairman and Chief Executive Officerof Philip Morris Companies Inc., says %u201ctheNext Wave Festival has gained a well deserved reputation for caring about daring.It has become a powerful cultural catalyst,uniting a wide spectrum of avant-garde artists in dynamic collaborations. Events like the NextWave Festival insure that New York willremain the most dynamic and creativeplace to live and work in the world.%u201dThe 1986 Next Wave Festival, BAM%u2019sfourth annual festival of contemporary performing arts, is international in scope, andwill commission, produce, and present newdance, music, theater, and performance artworks.These include: %u201cRoaratorio,%u201d a collaboration by Merce Cunningham and John Cage;choreographic premieres by America%u2019sMark Morris, David Gordon, Bill T. Jones,and Artie Zane, and Molissa Fenley;Japanese born artists Eiko & Koma,England%u2019s Michael Clark, and Belgium%u2019sAnne Teresa de Keersmaeker; andtheatrical productions by Ping Chong%u2019s FijiCompany.Also on the program are: ImpossibleTheater and John Schneider, and the FlyingKaramazov Brothers with the KamikazeGround Crew; %u201cSongs of Innocence and OfExperience,%u201d by William Bolcom performed by the Brooklyn Philharmonic and fourchoruses under Lukas Foss; new music programs performed by Jon Hassell, KronosQuartet, and John Zorn; plus the Americanpremiere of the Rome Section of %u201ctheCIVIL warS%u201d by Philip Glass and RobertWilson.The leadership for the 1986 Next WaveProducers Council includes Co-ChairmenMr. and Mrs. Amory Houghton III, AlexKatz, Roger Wallace, and Bette Midler;Honorary Chairman for the Next Wave F estival opening night benefit is Bianca Jagger. The Producers Council provides annualprivate patronage for BAM%u2019s Next WaveFestival and also organizes and sponsorsseminars, exhibitions, publications, and special events for this program throughout theyear.Philip Morris, the 1986 Next Wave sponsor, began its support of the arts in 1958.Since then the company%u2019s efforts havegrown into one of the more comprehensivecorporate cultural programs in the UnitedStates. Philip Morris gave its first grant toBAM in 1968. The company has continuously supported BAM since 1979. In 1981, PhilipMorris supported BAM%u2019s production ofPhilip Glass%u2019s %u201cSatyagraha,%u201d a major partof the first Next Wave Series, the predecessor of the current festival.
