(Esther Bushey Photo)Photos Travel HereA traveling exhibition of 40 black-andwhite photographs by Brooklyn-born artist Joel-Peter Witkin opens at The Brooklyn Museum on August 1. %u201cJoel-Peter Witkin: Forty Photographs,%u201d a survey of the artist%u2019s often-controversial themes and imagery dating from 1974 to 1985, is Witkin%u2019s first one-man exhibition in major American museums, and continues through Sept. 22.Witkin%u2019s photography creates a phantasmagorical world with images that often relate to death and sexual deviance. Witkin says his photographs are painstakingly composed, using models who understand the nature of the imagery and willingly participate, and although his images are often shocking and confrontational and explore the dark side of human nature, they have deep, spiritualistically affirmative undertones. After taking the photograph, Witkin works on the negative using tissue paper to soften the image in places or scratching into the emulsion. He then prints on a warmtoned paper and uses two separate toners. The finished exhibition print has a warm brownish tone that imparts an illusion of age.Grammy Winner PlaysTito Puente will join Celebrate Brooklyn%u2019s music series at the Prospect Park Bandshell as part of the %u201cLatin%u201d themed concerts Aug. 1-3.
