(Phoenix/TaylorPhoto)Parochial Schools Take A Byte OutOf Their Local Public CounterpartsAmong special events to come are student council elections set for September, which help teach students about the purpose and workings of a democracy. There is also a new music program at the school this year, which will focus on different kinds of recorders; students involved in the activity will give a concert in May. There will also be a concert and play performed in honor of the 100th anniversary of the St. Francis Xavier parish.SACRED HEART AND ST. STEPHEN Hie Sacred Hearts and St. Stephen School, 135 Summit St. in Carroll Gardens, has a new motto this year: %u201cGoin%u2019 towards the future.%u201d To bear this out, computer technology and related studies have been integrated into the entire curriculum.The school has a special project with Cornell University, which provides drug information for grades 6-8. Professors will come from Cornell to give supplies to teachers and provide information to the kids. Sacred Hearts-St. Stephen is one of 12 schools in the state participating in the program. There are approximately 275 students enrolled in the school.BY JARED R. CLOUD All Catholic parochial elementary schools start on September 3. They%u2019re all co-educational, but vary when it come to enrollment and programs, with the exception of one undeniable trend: computers are invading the schools, and are becoming a normal part of almost all curricula.QUEEN OF ALL SAINTS Fort Greene Catholic School, which was Queen of All Saints School until 1973, will bring back its old name this fall. For the first time, this fall will see kindergarten classes at the school, which has approximately 400 students. The school will continue its ongoing computer program. Physical education classes will follow guidelines set by the President%u2019s Physical Fitness Program. The school is at Vanderbilt and Lafayette Aves.ST. SAVIOURSt. Saviour Elementary School, 701 Eighth Ave., has a full-time computer teacher coming this fall. Students from kindergarten through the fourth grade have one period of computer-assisted instruction per week; fifth through eighth graders have two periods per week of computer-assisted instruction and an introduction to BASIC.St. Saviour is starting a pre-kindergarten program this year, with morning and afternoon sessions. There is a non-academic emphasis, stressing socialization and learning how to deal with others.Continuing this fall is the school%u2019s special music program with weekly classes, including music therapy. The music teacher is a licensed music therapist. There is also an afterschool center, known as %u201cSt.Saviour Special Programs,%u201d in the basement, from 2:30-6. Hie school has approximately 300 students.ST. THOMAS AQUINAS Hie St. Thomas Aquinas School, 211 8th Street, has a special music program coming this fall, in which students will study the lives of the composers as well as the music they wrote. The physical education classes this year are being organized around the President%u2019s Program for Physical Fitness. An afterschool program is offered at the school until 5:30pm, a repeat of popular continuing offerings by the school, which has a total of 250 students enrolled.ST. AUGUSTINE-ST, FRANCIS XAVIER St. Augustine-St. Francis Xavier, with some 500 students, is following the general trend of expanding computer programs, by adding six new Apple computers to its existing collection of TRS-80s, making a total of 18 computers at the school.The school, located at 763 President St. in Psrk Slope, 1* co!%u2019*%u2019n\program from 2-6pm; the program will feature tutors to help with homework, and arts and crafts.
