BROOKLYN N Y 1 1 2 0 8Brooklyn,__ IncCity Divests Its StockNew York City%u2019s largest pension fund hassold 2.5 million shares of stock in 17 companies that do business in South Africa, thetrustees of the New York City Employees%u2019Retirement System (NYCERS) announcedthis month.The sale completes phase I of NYCERS%u2019four-part divestiture program. Under phaseI the pension system disinvested from anycompany selling certain goods or servicesto the South African government and itsagencies, and from any company that refused to sign the Sullivan Principles, a set ofequal opportunity guidelines for companiesdoing business in South Africa. In addition,NYCERS has adopted a list of 45 companieswhich NYCERS will not purchase.The 17 companies whose stock was soldby NYCERS are: Bundy, 7,000 shares;Chevron, 405,500; Control Data, 34,600;Firestone Tire, 103,400; Fluor, 106,576; FordMotor, 263,677; Foster Wheeler, 99,800;Hughes Tool, 161,800; Lubrizol, 89,100;Mobil, 536,900; Nalco Chemical, 78,800; National Standard, 10,000; Raytheon, 96,600;Texaco, 293,200; Wean United, 8,000;Westinghouse, 202,000 and Wynn%u2019s International, 9,300.The stock was originally purchased for$63,496,000 and sold for $92,631,000.Brooklyn Is ZonedGovernor Mario M. Cuomo has signedlegislation under which areas of Brooklynwill qualify for possible designation as%u201cEconomic Development Zones%u201d and thefirst proposals are expected to be made thismonth for sites here.Cuomo first proposed creation of the program when he called for establishment of%u201cOpportunity Zones%u201d in his 1986 State-ofthe-State message. The Legislature passeda bill establishing 40 such zones, which werecalled Economic Development Zones in thebill.These opportunity zones were created totarget pockets of poverty for job creationand business development. The zones willhelp selected distressed areas by providinga broad range of State and local incentivesdesigned to draw in new investments anajobs and encourage existing businesses toexpand. The incentives will be tailored to fitthe needs of small, start-up firms and newlyexpanding businesses.The package includes subsidized capital,business cost reductions, tax incentives andtechnical assistance.
