It must be raining,%u201d she adds.%u201cThat%u2019s why we are going so slowSeveral of the actors, both those on theset and those waiting in the dressing roomsand make-up rooms upstairs, observe thatthe taping this day is taking longer thanusual. But there is no time to discuss itbecause the stage manager is calling forquiet and the tape begins to roll.Meanwhile, upstairs Patricia Hodges isbeing made up to play Maisie Watkins, atruck stop waitress who now owns thediner. %u201cI came here as just a day player,%u201dshe says as her eyes are smudged withbrown and yellow hues. She lives in CobbleHill, but takes on a Southern accent whenshe hits the set.THE SOUTHERN ACCENT WORKEDWhen I started here I was just a waitress, and I wondered what I could do with it, youknow, to stand out. I tried the southern accent and it worked.%u201d Many a plan has beenhatched and many a hand held held inMaisie%u2019s Diner. %u201cI%u2019m the sort of characterthat can keep things going. People come inand keep me up to date, and that way wecan keep the audience up to date.%u201dKeeping the audience up to date is important in soaps, especially with plots that nowchange quickly. %u201cWe used to do just 15 to 17pieces per show,%u201d says Stevens of thenumber of scene changes. %u201cNow on severaloccasions we%u2019ve gone over 30. We%u2019re tryingto stay in the 25 range to keep it from getting too confused.%u201dThe increased number of pieces makesediting essential to the quality of the show,as the scenes are not taped in sequence. Each segment is timed down to the second, and pieced together again by theeditors under the watchful eye of the producer and directors.%u201cAnother World%u201d has several differentdirectors and producers who all worktogether at different times. Continuitycomes from the script, the story line andthe ability of the creators to understand oneanother%u2019s creative soul. %u201cYou have toremember the limitations of the medium,%u201dsays Marge Dougherty, production coordinator, who spent this morning as our tourguide. %u201cEveryone realizes that, and if youfollow the story line and the script, the continuity remains with different directors andproducers.%u201dMUSIC ENHANCES THE MOODAfter the tape is edited together, thesound is edited on. An entire wall next to theediting room is devoted to sound effects andmusic. Music, especially in daytimedramas, enhances the mood the actors havecreated. When all the pieces come together, thetrysts and turmoil in Bay City make it tothe small screen %u2014 usually less than twoweeks after the episode is taped. %u201cWe%u2019reworking about eight days ahead now,%u201d saysDougherty. %u201cWhich is a little behind, but weBrooklyn,____incPatricia Hodges, who plays Maisie on Another World travels from her Cobble Hill home to the Brooklyn studio, and is shown here in makeup. She%u2019s been on the show a couple of years, but has lived in Brooklyn for almost a decade. (Brooklyn,Inc/Kirk Photo)do take some days off.%u201dTime is confused in the Brooklyn studioas actors play parts a week in advance, butknow the story line several weeks in advance. Lines are memorized only days(even hours) before they are repeated forthe camera. It is a frantic laziness focussedon the action in front and behind thecamera, but languishing in the dressingrooms %u2014 waiting for the call.Daytime drama is fantasy culled fromreality creating timeless problems and joys, but occasionally, the reality spills into theset from fantasy. Take Rhonda Lewin, forinstance, just signed to play Victoria Love.%u201cI was here for a modeling booking,%u201d shesays. %u201cActually on vacation from California. I came here, auditioned for the part, and got it. I started yesterday.%u201d She saysworking on the soap is so far an exhiliratingexperience. %u201cIt%u2019s been a great vacation.%u201dBut for the hundreds of people who workat the Brooklyn studio breathing life intoBay City, the action is a job. And right nowthat job is to keep the rain falling in Bay City, while the rest of the workforce enjoysthe Brooklyn sunshine.I'm th e s o rt o f ch a ra cte r th a tcan keep th in g s g o in g .
