3 BLUE ORIGIN OLS (Q2 2015 TO Q4 2017)
The Blue Origin Orbital Launch System (OLS) Manufacturing Complex was a first of its kind rocket
manufacturing plant. The Blue Origin mission is “millions of people living and working in space.” The first
step in this mission is to provide privatized space flight and earn government/private contracts for the
launching of satellites into space. Blue Origin is a Jeff Bezos (Amazon founder) company headquartered in
Kent, Washington. Blue Origin originated in 2001 and started development of the scale-sized rocket that
was used to develop the "Launch, Land, Repeat" mantra, and is the backbone of their rocket design.
Blue is developing vehicles that will have multiple flights (first stage of the rocket returns to Earth to be restored
and reused). For many years they had been optimizing the suborbital New Shepard rocket. This rocket is three
stories tall and is fabricated out of their Kent facility. After many successful launches, Blue was ready to move
into the next phase which included the design and fabrication of the orbital class New Glenn (322’ tall). This
required a larger plant and a need to build closer to locations with facilities that would allow launch of their
larger rocket. In 2015, Blue extended an RFP for their new rocket manufacturing facility. They did not have
detailed program needs or a location identified for the new facility. Haskell assisted Blue in navigating the project
development hurdles and site due diligence to get the project moving quickly and in the right direction.
The project was partially funded privately by Jeff Bezos, but Blue also received funding
through Space Florida and other grants through the state of Florida to promote growth
and create more jobs. This is how they landed the facility on the Space Coast.
