these Japanese actions. Factories of Japanese companies and
Air Self-Defense Force bases that store fighter jet parts could
become targets of North Korean attacks.
Therefore, it is essential to deepen the cooperative relationship
among the United States, Japan, and South Korea, and in
this context, it is crucial to realize the agreements reached at
the Trilateral Summit held at Camp David in August 2023.
This cooperation is also vital for handling a potential crisis
in Taiwan and for deterring China’s coercive actions and
attempts to change the status quo.
The Camp David Summit in 2023 culminated in the creation
of three key documents: the “Camp David Principles,” the
“Spirit of Camp David,” and the “Commitment to Consult.”
These documents emphasize a shared vision and values among
the three nations. The “Principles” articulate this shared vision
and partnership basis, while the “Spirit of Camp David”
details measures for “strengthening security cooperation” and
broadening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, aiming to
create a region that is thriving, connected, resilient, stable, and
secure.
Security cooperation will include a multi-year trilateral
exercise plan, building on the success of ballistic missile
defense and anti-submarine warfare exercises. There will
also be collaboration on ballistic missile defense, including
real-time missile warfare data exchange, a trilateral working
group on North Korea cyber activities, enhanced information
sharing, coordination, and countering foreign information
manipulation.
