BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD OF IL
MEDICAL PLANS
Blue Cross Blue Shield of IL (“BCBSIL”), in concert with other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans across
the US, offers one of the nation’s largest network of providers to ensure you and your family have
access to care where ever you live and work. For 2021 we will be offering the traditional PPO 1200
alongside our two Health Savings Account compatible high-deductible Consumer Driven Health
Plans (CDHPs), the CDHP 1500 and CDHP 3000. As illustrated on the next page, PPO plans are
traditional copay based plans with low deductibles and slightly higher monthly premiums, whereas
CDHPs cost less on a monthly basis in exchange for greater cost-sharing only when care is actually
needed. Pairing a CDHP with a Health Savings Account allows you to save for the “what ifs” in life
and reduces your taxable income.
As a reminder, BCBSIL made changes to their utilization management program regarding
preauthorization for certain procedures: advanced imaging, cardiology and sleep medicine, pain
management, joint and spine surgery, radiation therapy and genetic testing. They will continue to
require preauthorization for some specialty drugs as well. These preauthorizations will be done
by your provider but we wanted to share this information with you. See Blue Cross Blue Shield
Wellbeing Management information at the back of this guide.
Reminder, CVS pharmacies are NOT a part of the BCBSIL network.
