UNESCO estimates that 44 million additional teachers are needed globally by 2030 to meet
Sustainable Development Goal 4, ensuring quality education for all. Most of the demand is at the

secondary level, with more than half of new hires required to replace teachers leaving the
        profession.

GEMS welcomed 1,700 new teachers this academic year, which began on Monday. But demand is
rising faster. Dubai’s student population grew by more than 16,000 last year, bringing total

enrolment to more than 387,000. With six new schools opening in Dubai alone, pressure to recruit
        is intensifying.

Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority is reviewing more than 20 applications to
construct private schools, part of its Education Strategy 33, which targets 100 new openings by
2033. But staffing them remains a challenge.

The UAE may need to hire as many as 30,000 additional teachers in the next six years, according
to Dr Vanina Torlo, partner at consultancy Oliver Wyman.
