Dubai announces flexible work
hours for a few employees in
summer
By: Caroline
The day has finally arrived! Dubai has announced flexible work hours for certain
government employees from July 1 to September 12.
The same falls under the ‘Our Flexible Summer’ initiative, which could also potentially
be really helpful with traffic going forward.
The Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR) said these flexible
work hours will be implemented based on each entity’s discretion. As of now, it’s only
applicable to the federal sector.
The work pattern will align with the official five-day working hours, with the employees
divided into two groups.
While it’s looking like the pilot testing for this will be run in the summer as of now, one
can hope the success will prompt widespread long-term rollout.
For the first group, it’s eight hours as usual from Monday to Thursday, with Friday being
an off day. This makes it a three-day weekend, the same as Sharjah.
However, the second group will work seven hours from Monday to Thursday and 4.5
hours on Friday.
The move is “aimed at enhancing work-life balance for government employees”, the
authority said, adding that it follows the “success of its pilot phase in 2024”.
With a whole lot of road developments and redevelopments underway across Dubai to
combat the mammoth traffic problem – this seems like a promising start towards the
better. Fingers crossed for private sector employees!
