5. Give regular feedback

Regular feedback engages students so they remain connected to the teacher, the class and the content.
Formal, regular feedback on performance against standards is needed, as much as informal comments and
suggestions to build a positive, connected learning experience for students. This avoids ‘dead space’ online
and helps build community. The use of student names during class helps overcome the distance.
             • Check work regularly
                 • using PDF, and voice / video annotator for personalised feedback
                 • during a lesson using a document camera
                 • during a lesson via the Share Screen function in Zoom
                 • for simple tasks, students can even hold their work up to the camera 37
                 • students with handwritten work can quickly take a photo of their work and share it in Zoom.
             • Mark work regularly, within the same time frame that you are expect work to be hand in
             • Respond personally to forum posts and make sure Student grade books are published.
             • Create graded forums and glossary entries to provide added incentive for students to post responses
                 online.
             • All summative assessments should be uploaded to Canvas in the assessment task area.
             • Students at all levels thrive on feedback. This goes a long way to building a positive class environment
                 that students want to attend.
             • Give feedback during discussions, using the students names.
             • Refer back to work underway on Canvas and give verbal feedback on a current forum discussion or
                 group work.
             • Praise students for quality work and display examples of work, with students’ permission.
             • consider how to give regular feedback on students learning center study time?
                 • Which forum works?
                 • Does this work contribute to a grade or assessment task?
                 • Consider group and peer feedback / appraisal

          6. Surprise your students

Sometimes little extras go a long way. Take time to think of how to build in some “wow factor” to a lesson, to
break up the routine and inject some excitement into the learning experience.
Students appreciate the effort of teachers who bring something extra and avoid the monotony of too much
          routine – be creative!
             • Use of a range of submission tools in Canvas, from assignments, quizzes, discussions
             • Ask your students to annotate on your screen using Zoom
             • Consider a guest speaker online, or use the many VC opportunities to link your students live across
                 the world with virtual excursions
             • Use approved audio and video stimuli such as ClickView, podcasts or famous speeches
             • Try a cross – campus breakout discussion using Zoom.
             • Try a Kahoot
             • Help students to explore some of the possibilities of learning within study period time.
             • Surprise them with a different method of research, such as books, interviewing people, field studies
             • Likewise, many different submission methods are possible.
