Most classical festivals are spread out over some weeks, with tickets available for individual
performances. Buxton has an acclaimed literary strand as well as its own fringe. Only a mile
away from each other are the Glyndebourne festival with its superb opera and the Love Supreme
jazz jamboree with eminent divas such as Chaka Khan. An enterprising music fan could perhaps
tick off both.
Tell us which festivals you’re looking forward to, or which ones we’ve overlooked in the
comments below.
La Linea
Who’s playing? Lila Downs, Nação Zumbi, Domenico Lancellotti and Ricardo Dias Gomes,
Los Tigres del Norte, Ana Tijoux.
What is it? Latin music is a treacherously amorphous genre, but this annual season does a fine
job of covering the waterfront, from mariachi music to manguebeat, bossa nova, electronica, rap
and classically influenced tango.
When? April 12 to 22 (comono.co.uk/la-linea), £16.50-£134
Where? Various venues across London
Cheltenham Jazz Festival
Who’s playing? Gregory Porter, Jack Savoretti, UB40, Dionne Warwick
What is it? Last year’s curator, Gregory Porter, is the closest the headliners get to jazz (UB40?),
but peer beyond the pop acts on offer in the picturesque spa town and you’ll find genuine
improvising greatness. Look out for the crowd-galvanising fusion of the vast collective Snarky
Puppy and the intensely inventive trumpeter Theo Croker; the world’s best jazz pianist Brad
Mehldau in a trio setting; and a Caribbean-themed 60th birthday celebration from the UK’s
multi-reeds perennial Courtney Pine. This year’s line-up is also a bonanza for lovers of the
female voice with Dionne Warwick, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Norma Winstone among a clutch
of celebrated singers.
When? May 1-6 (cheltenhamfestivals.com/jazz), £10-£76
Where? Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Norfolk & Norwich
