Cheltenham Music Festival

Who’s playing? Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Roderick Williams, Sean Shibe,
        Marian Consort

What is it? Handsome spa town hosting mostly classical repertoire, with big emphasis this year

on Gustav Holst who was born in Cheltenham 150 years ago.

        When? July 3-13 (cheltenhamfestivals.com), £10-£50

Where? Town Hall and other venues, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

        Buxton International Festival

Who’s playing? Orchestra of Opera North, Nadine Benjamin, Christian Curnyn, Paul Lewis,

        Golda Schultz

What is it? Nestled in the Peak District, the festival is centred on Frank Matcham’s lovely opera

house but also spills out into other venues around town. Opera is at its core, and this year the

main event is a production of Verdi’s rarely performed Ernani, though there are also recitals by

top-notch classical musicians and an extensive literary programme.
        When? July 4-21 (buxtonfestival.co.uk), free-£88

        Where? Various venues, Buxton, Derbyshire

        Love Supreme

Who’s playing? Terence Trent D’Arby, Chaka Khan, Mahalia, Black Pumas

What is it? Europe’s biggest outdoor jazz festival may stretch the definition of jazz with its

headliners Chaka Khan, Mahalia and Black Pumas, but once inside Glynde Place you will hear
many more hardcore sounds. The former Miles Davis and Mahavishnu drummer Billy Cobham

and the pioneering bossa nova pianist Sérgio Mendes lead the veterans, while the nuanced

drummer-leader Johnathan Blake and the bracing, folk-inclined Scots pianist Fergus McCreadie

are among the most notable younger performers. Look out too for the hard bop-to-postbop

bassist Christian McBride and the brain-twisting Japanese jazz-funk’n’fusion project Hiromi’s

        Sonicwonder.
        When? July 5-7 (lovesupremefestival.com), £189.20 (weekend camping)

        Where? Glynde Place, East Sussex
