What is it? The slickest and longest of the “country house” opera festivals, presided over by
Gus Christie — the third Christie to run the place from a house next door to the theatre — with a
little help from his wife, the charismatic soprano Danielle de Niese, a regular fixture on the bill.
This year she stars in a new production of The Merry Widow, there’s a new Carmen and Robin
Ticciati conducts Tristan und Isolde with the powerhouse Australian tenor Stuart Skelton.

What is it? The Buckinghamshire estate of Mark Getty (yes, those Gettys) hosts operas in an
award-winning theatre through which you watch the sun slowly set over the trees (if the opera is
dull, though it won’t be). Rameau, Britten and Verdi’s second opera Un giorno di regno are on
the bill.
