Young
Writers The Sweet Taste of Fairness
During the harvest season, Ginia and Ramu travelled to their
grandparents’ home in Andheri, Mumbai, eager to join the festivi-
ties. Their grandmother welcomed them warmly and gathered all
the children to enjoy ripe, juicy mangoes. But when she served
them, the boys received the biggest, sweetest pieces, while the
girls, including Ginia, got much smaller portions.
“Why did the boys get more?” Ginia whispered sadly to her cousin.
Days later, while the adults were away, a thud startled the
girls from their game. They rushed inside to find their grandmoth-
er injured—she had sprained her ankle! Without hesitation, Midhu—
the eldest—helped her into the car and took her to the hospital.
The girls stayed by her side, caring for her every step of the
way.
Touched by their maturity, the grandmother reflected on her ear-
lier actions. “I was wrong to treat the girls unfairly,” she admit-
ted. She asked Ginia’s mother to bring more mangoes. This time,
she served whole ones to the girls first, saving the smaller pieces
for the boys.
“I’m sorry,” she said softly. “I realize now that respect and love
should be equal for everyone.”
The girls smiled, forgiving her. As they savored each
sweet bite, Ginia felt hopeful. She knew this simple act
of fairness had planted a seed of change that could grow
for generations.
