SCCTM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS NOVEMBER 16 - 17, 2023
Friday Session T21 11:40 - 12:05 100B
The Impact of Using Children's Literature to Teach Middle
Grades Math
Students are underperforming on teacher-created assessments and assignments, state
assessments, and nationally normed assessments, such as the Measures of Academic
Performance (MAP) and the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP). Only 35.7% of
South Carolina sixth-graders scored “meets or exceeds expectations” on the 2022 SC READY
(South Carolina Department of Education, 2023). Students need a way to connect math to
something familiar so that new learning can occur. According to Lindfors in Whitin and Whitin
(2004), “Classroom teachers are increasingly aware that children’s literature can contribute to
the teaching of mathematics'' (p. ix).
Middle school math students in South Carolina are struggling on these assessments, with only
35.7% meeting expectations on the 2022 SC READY test. To enhance math education, consider
integrating literature into your lessons, a strategy recognized by experts like Lifors, in in Whitin
and Whitin (2004), “Classroom teachers are increasingly aware that children’s literature can
contribute to the teaching of mathematics'' (p. ix). This approach can make math more
engaging, boost performance on local, state, and national assessmednts, and align with
College and Career Readiness standards. Explore lesson plans, book recommendations, and
fun activities to create an enjoyable math learning experience for your students. Join us and
discover the benefits of combining leterature and math in your classroom! Leave with lesson
plans, a book list, foldables, rubrics, and prizes! Come giggle with us!
