SCCTM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS NOVEMBER 16 - 17, 2023

               Friday Session F104 12:50 - 1:40 103

Guiding Students to Finding the Joys in Mathematics
Using Low Floor High Ceiling Openers

Low Floor – High Ceiling Math Tasks encourage student to engage in meaningful math
discourse, problem solving, and conceptual understanding, fostering creativity and equal
success for all students. These types of tasks allow equal success of all students to work at
their own paces and depths allowing students to focus on what they do know and not what
they don’t know. This is when creativity comes into place and the students are able to create
different paths to the solution. When students are able to take ownership of their own thinking,
this creates a positive classroom environment where students change their mindset to
believing they can do math, which leads them to believing math is fun and there is joy in
mathematics.. Some of these tasks include but not limited to:

Tell me everything you can about…
                                                                         Interest Level: Grades 6 - 12
                Two Truths and a Lie
                                                                               Emily Liptak

                                         Number Sense is FUNdamental!

Developing a strong number sense in young children sets a foundation for later mathematical
success. To build number sense, students need to be moving, manipulating, exploring,
thinking, creating, sharing, and talking. Join us to experience a variety of engaging activities
that expose children to the fundamental number sense concepts.
