SCCTM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS NOVEMBER 16 - 17, 2023
Friday Session F94 11:50- 12:40 103
Using Algebra Tiles to Illustrate Substitution Method to Factor
Trinomials
In this session, we offer a novel approach to factoring trinomials, that is not only
mathematically sound, but also explains many steps that go unjustified in other algorithms.
Furthermore, we highlight how the method can be carried out symbolically and with algebra
tiles, providing an additional tool to help students make sense.

Now You See It...
What's the best way to make math engaging and accessible for all students? Make it visual!
When students can access math visually, they make more connections and develop deeper
understanding. We'll explore number sense routines, hands-on activities, and tools that help to
build mathematical visuals for students.

Learning Trajectories
Following the Learning Trajectories that lead to student success. Participants will learn about
Learning Trajectories tied to Doug Clements and Julie Samaras work and research and ways to
implement learning in the classroom that leads to student success. Participants will also have
a chance for hands on learning through game-based learning that address Number Sense.
