Using Math Nation to Raise the Rigor needed for SC State
Testing
Join Math Nation's Dr. Tiffany Arnold and several of her math teacher/specialist friends as we
dive into how Math Nation digital and print resources are being used across the Palmetto State
to prepare students for the DOK 2 and 3 level questions they will encounter on the EOC and
SCReady exams. Leave with a full review to ready to implement in your class the last few days
before testing.

Transforming Mathematics Learning with Interactive
Tools and Open-Ended Problems
Studies suggest that the implementation of open ended problems in mathematics teaching is
one way to strengthen students' conceptual understanding. The use of carefully crafted open-
ended problems in the classroom not only encourages learners' flexible thinking but also helps
detect their misconceptions. However, what is less practiced and understood is how exactly
one should aim to implement such problems in a classroom setting. Teaching pre-service
middle school teachers for a few years using open-ended problems has given us insights that
may be useful to other teachers. We will share classroom-tested problems that indeed show
promise in facilitating fruitful conversations as well as helping students build conceptual
understanding. We will work through a few problems, encouraging participants to use
interactive graphing tools such as Desmos and Geogebra to experience a different way of
learning mathematics.
