Friday Session F82 10:30 - 11:20 102B
Finding the Joy in Problem Solving
Young mathematicians dread word problems; however, they do not have to be dreadful! This
working session implements the 4-step UPSC problem-solving model and uses sample SC
Ready questions. A simple strategy to benefit all mathematicians! Participants will leave with
resources to use in their classrooms tomorrow! Best suited for grades 3-5.

Math Stations: All of the standards, Without All of the
Prep
Creating standard aligned station tasks to promote critical thinking and problem solving.
Through the use of concrete, representational and abstract thinking students are given
opportunities to explore mathematical topics from the four main standard strands- numbers
and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, and measurement and data. These independent
stations include student recording sheets or ways to show their thinking as evidence for
learning. Make a shift from thinking that stations or centers need to be high prep with lots of
cutting and printing. Learn how to use the resources already available to create powerful
learning opportunities where the student is the driver of their own learning. Throughout the
presentation attendees will see examples and be given time to create takeaway stations that
align to their standards with immediate implementation. Using spiral review skills and touching
on the four main standard strands throughout the school year allows for a solid mathematical
foundation for students to be built when they are being both guided in small groups and
working independently.
