Using Debate to Foster Discussion and Create Meaningful
Writing Opportunities in the Math Classroom
We will demonstrate how engaging in dialogue and debate early on in a math course will open
up discussion and lead to students being able to problem solve, describe processes, apply
vocabulary, and explain error analysis via writing. We will also discuss how you can modify
these skills for any course and how they translate to future employment.

Engaging Learners in Algebra
Participants will be able to hear about projects that I have used in my algebra classroom that
engage learners and deepen the understanding of some of algebra’s hardest topics. Beyond
this we will talk about the value of student relationships in the math classroom. Participants
will end the session by engaging in one of the projects discussed.
