SCCTM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS NOVEMBER 16 - 17, 2023

                  Friday Session F100 11:50 - 12:40 Exhibit Hall Room

The Power of a Great Math Task

Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think” ~ Einstein. Research tells us that students need to
engage in open-ended math tasks that include mathematical discourse so they can develop reasoning and sense-making
skills. Quality math tasks allow students to construct their own learning through a guided inquiry approach. In this session, we
will discuss the indicators of a quality math task and explore practical strategies to promote math talk in our classrooms. Join
us, share your ideas, and walk away with several practical instructional strategies to use in your classroom! Outcomes: •
Discuss the research, barriers, and strategies around quality math tasks. • Discuss learning environments which encourage
math talk. • Experience a math task from both a teacher and student perspective. • Learn and practice language routines that
will make your classroom math discussions more effective and intentional.

Join Valencia as she demonstrates techniques for teachers to help under-achieving students
excel in math. This session will focus on State Standards like basic math facts, fractions,
decimals, and problem solving. Valencia will also dscuss problem-based learning, vertical
alignment planning, and creative assessment methods. You don’t want to miss this “Awesome
               Workshop!”

In this interactive session, engage in reasoning and representation activities for Algebra 1
using manipulatives and technology. Learn and share ideas to engage students in
               mathematical thinking using multiple senses.
