Discover the Joy of Discourse

Students are social beings who crave opportunities to share their thinking and brilliance
through mathematical discourse. Join Aiken County's K-5 Math Specialists and immerse
yourself with various forms of mathematical discourse that are being employed in our
classrooms to help transition students from mimickers of math to thinkers and doers of
mathematics.

Mathematical Practices and Gizmos

This session will demonstrate each of the math practices and how Gizmos support students as
they engage in those practices. Participants will also develop a deeper understanding of the
Standards for Mathematical Practice and learn to develop effective lessons around the
standards.
Participants will open with a discussion on understanding the Standards of Mathematical
Practice and the implications of using them in the classroom, model and share best practices
for using Gizmos to teach content standards that allow students to experiment, visualize and
draw conclusions about mathematics, and facilitate developing standards-based mathematics
lessons with Gizmos, and share lesson ideas with colleagues.
