New York Beauty in Red 1875-1925 based upon fading of reds. Purchase from antique store in Pomona,
CA in 1994. 67"x80" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Thin, probably cotton. Backing: Pale blue-green cotton. Edge:
Red tape applied by hand. Piecing: Machine. Quilting: By hand, 7 stitches to the inch, in arcs ¾" apart
("clamshell" or "Baptist fan"). Condition: Very good to excellent. The fading of some reds is the only defi-
ciency of this quilt. Comment: The bright red sashes are probably "Turkey red." The reds that have faded to
pinkish brown are a synthetic seen from 1875 to 1975, according to "Clues in Calico" by Barbara Brackman,
EPM Publications, no copyright logo. The home dye product was called "Congo Red."
