new york beauty and pickle dish 253
Pickle Dish 1880-1900. eBay purchase from South Carolina in 2012. 71"x85" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Medium
weight. Backing: Cotton, red tiny scale gingham. Edge: The back is brought to the front ¼" and caught by
hand. Piecing: The teeth on the pickle dishes are pieced by hand. Arcs, squares, and lines are machine
stitched. Quilting: By hand, 3-4 stitches per inch, clamshell pattern in arcs an inch apart. Condition: Very
graphical, but BEWARE–the greens are very unstable and should not be washed or exposed to direct light.
The whites in the border show considerable age tanning. Some browns have transferred onto the pieces
next to them. It’s tempting to give it a good washing, but that would destroy it. Comment: This is one of
my favorite patterns, so I had to have it for the collection.
