Oak Leaf Reel and Swag Seller said late 1880s. eBay purchase in 2015. The seller said it is from southern Illi-
nois. 92"x96" Fabric: White muslin blocks; wool appliqués applied with pink embroidery thread. The seller
said that the muslin came from feed sacks. Batting: None. Backing: Heavy cream-colored fabric woven
closely with thick thread. I don’t know the name of the fabric. Edge: Two sides knife-edged and stitched
by hand. Others, front is turned to the back 1", one is stitched by hand and the other covered with a satin
ribbon applied by machine, apparently to cover a raw edge. Piecing: Blocks appear joined by machine.
Appliqué is by hand. Quilting: Barely visible white on white in a couple of curved lines from each reel to
the edge of the block, 4 stitches per inch. Condition: Good. The fabric is clean and solid. Some of the green
color has migrated onto the white. Comment: Chosen to exemplify an old-fashioned popular pattern.
