Sampler No later than 1930s. Purchased at the Puyallup fairgrounds antique show in 1995. From an Ohio
migrant to Winlock, WA. 83"x85" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Medium weight cotton. Backing: Cotton print
with a small blue and orange motif. Edge: The back is brought ¾" to the front and caught by hand. Piecing:
Motifs are finely pieced by hand. Blocks are joined by machine. Quilting: In a grid of vertical and diagonals
lines across the quilt. Condition: Good. A brown age stain 3" long and ¾" wide shows on one of the front
patches. A center fold line is beginning to tan. There are 5 other small age stains. A seam between blocks
opened for about 6" and has been repaired. Comment: Sampler quilts with a good variety of patterns and
colors distributed attractively across the quilt seem very popular. When I bought this and was walking
out with it, an antique dealer of my acquaintance from North Bend, WA, cried out, and said that she had
planned to buy it for herself. I suspect that the age stain occurred when I lived in the humidity of the
west side of the Cascades. I would love to call this "very good," because it’s a personal favorite, but I can’t
because of the stain that shows.
