Folk Appliqué in Pink and Blue Contemporary, guessing from shaded fabric and batting used. eBay purchase
2014. 86"x100" Fabric: Cotton muslin. The pink fabric shades into lavender. Batting: Medium weight, but
unbunched under sparse quilting, so contemporary. Heavy enough to be cotton. Backing: Cotton muslin
to match the front. Edge: Blue border was attached to the back, turned over the top, and stitched. Then
the top-stitching just outside the border on the field of the quilt was added by machine. Piecing: Blocks
are joined by machine. Motifs are applied with a tiny blanket stitches by machine. Quilting: By machine
around figural motifs, through blocks and triangles, and creating radiating lines from the star image, with
machine backstitching left in at the star. Condition: Very Good. Would be excellent except for a pale ½"
palpable brown spot near the motif of a boy. Comment: This quilt looks like a professional design, although
it has primitive and customized images. Some of the images are plainly professional design, like the dog
resting on a rug, looking like a 1930s redwork pattern. Others, like the chicken and duck, look primitive.
Some look custom, like what appears to be a microphone. Others contain initials, LAeA, MP, SC, H, and
A, and would be custom. I have looked at websites picturing Chinese imports, and found nothing like this.
There is no evidence it ever had a tag. The machine lines radiating from the star with visible backstitching
1" long at the end of the line is not at all commercial.
