Tree of Life in Red on White 1920s, judging from maroon chintz (cretone) backing. Purchased at the Seattle
Kingdome April 1989 from a Salem, OR vendor. 62"x92" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Cotton. Backing: Cotton
flamboyant large-scale floral on a maroon ground. Edge: White loose-weave cotton cut on the straight grain,
hand stitched to the front and hemmed to the back for a ½" border on each side. Piecing: By hand with
tiny regular stitches of nearly machine-like regularity. Quilting: By hand. In pieced blocks the quilting
echoes the shape of the pieces 1⁄8" inside seam lines. In white blocks, quilting forms a 4-petaled flower
with another motif in each corner. In the border, the quilting is a two-stranded braid ending in a point at
the corner, stitched along pencil mark guidelines. Condition: Very good; the front has a 2" yellow stain, one
browned triangle within a tree, and three match-head sized brown age freckles. Pencil lines for quilting
show in the border. Comment: The tan color of the border could have been a fugitive green, but isn’t green
in covered areas.
