Top Teens of America
Area VI Top Teens conference began with an evening of camaraderie and excitement by showcasing chapters in
the area. The teens continued the evening networking and sharing experiences with those in attendance.
The Friday off site the teens visited the One and Only Charles Drew University of Medical and Science located in
the Watts-Willowbrook section of South Los Angeles. Charles Drew University of Medical and Science Postgrad-
uate Medical School was incorporated in response to the lack of adequate medical facilities in the area, the institu-
tion later became a University and changed its name in 1987 to reflect its expanded academic role and identity. The
University is named in honor of Dr. Charles R. Drew, a brilliant African-American physician, famous for his pio-
neering work in blood preservation. His dedication to learning and sharing knowledge to benefit mankind is the
inspiration. As of date, CDWMS provides graduates with degrees for careers in Medicine (MD), Biomedical Sci-
ences, Radiologic Technology, Public Health, Urban Community Heath, Physician Assistant, and Graduate de-
grees in Nursing. CDWMS collaborates with the community to provide training to MLK Health Center and
UCLA.
From the university, the Teens expanded their knowledge in Arts by visiting the Historical THE WATTS TOW-
ERS and the Watts Tower ARTS CENTER CAMPUS. The teens were provided a tour of the center by resident
artist Carlos Spivey.
Teens participate and won prizes for the Black History Bowl and later watched a move “13th” a documentary the
provides an in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it reveals the nation's history of racial
inequality.
Saturday morning provided the teens with an experience of various workshops from different speakers: the
Lady Cheryl Smiley and Lady Elnora Norwood provided “All about College Admission”, Ms. Danielle
Wilson provided a hands on workshop on healthy eating, Mrs. Julie Harbour “Dress for Success”, Lady
Rekena Boyd-Kamei “Human Trafficking” and Lady Dr. Deborah Cotton “Self Esteem and Building Your
Self Expression”.
The Afternoon Keynote Speaker Mr. Lyonell LP Henson, a retired Parole and Correctional Officer provided the
teens with knowledge on “Being Black in America” and “What to do when stopped by the Police”
