LADY INA BOLTON BROWN HUMANITARIAN AWARD

A highlight of the conference was the awarding of the INA BOLTON BROWN Humanitarian award which was
given to Thomas Leon Covington, R.N. ret. for his unselfish humanitarian endeavors to improve the human
condition through saving lives, improving the quality of life, and alleviating suffering, while supporting and con-
tributing to the basic human dignity of those in need - especially our children.
As a nurse at Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles Thomas Leon Covington’s primary area of expertise was in the
Center for Blood Diseases and Cancer. During his tenure, he served many long-term cancer patients, patients
with sickle cell disease, and tumors. During his 46 ½ year career he chose to work the night shift which is what
made him the ideal candidate for the Humanitarian Award.
He was given many opportunities to learn, grow, lead and mentor others. From June 20, 1970 until January 6,
2017, he cared for and supported countless patients and families from the general Los Angeles area and around
the world. In his acceptance speech he challenged the Top Teens of America in attendance to seek our a career
in nursing and expressed how rewarding it is.
Mr. Thomas Leon Covington received a standing ovation and was most humbled to be honored by Top Ladies
of Distinction, Inc.
