Lady Darrlyn Johnson, Chair and the Blessing in a Backpack Committee of Ladies presented in excess of one
thousand four hundred backpacks to two Houston area elementary Schools. Teens boxed up and loaded the back-
packs for delivery to the schools in Houston, Texas.
Area One chapters donated over 700 books that were given to two elementary schools in the Houston Area. The
books were given to Atherton Elementary School and Peck Elementary Schools as a part of our Literacy Project.
Executive Program Director, Lady Joyce Jacquet, Cluster Coordinators and Co-Coordinators met to summarize
activities related to programs and projects of TLOD, discuss plans to determine the direction in which to proceed
targeting membership retention of Ladies and Teens, review and discuss events relative to increasing participation
of new Ladies and Teens and review cluster presentations for the Cluster Rally. Cluster Coordinators are:
• Northeast Cluster: Lady Deirdre Phillips, Marshall All America, Cluster Coordinator
Lady Virginia Thomas, Lufkin Chapter, Cluster Co-Coordinator
• Southeast Cluster: Lady Annie Mouton, Lake Charles, Cluster Coordinator
Lady Trina Williams, New Orleans, Cluster Co-Coordinator
• Southwest Cluster: Lady Shanda Provost, Missouri City, Cluster Coordinator
Lady Mildred Robinson, Suburban Bayou City, Cluster Co-Coordinator
• West Cluster: Lady Rhonda Harris, River City, Cluster Coordinator
Lady Eleanor Sweeney, San Antonio Metro, Cluster Co-Coordinator
Area One Top Teens were fortunate to participate in the College Fair at the conference. Representatives from
twelve colleges and universities, which included many HBCU’s, shared information with Teens about admissions,
financial aid and general information about their respective schools. Teens completed their passports as documen-
tation of their visits to the college and university displays.
Leadership activities at the 48th Area One Conference were highlighted by Area One’s and National’s most capable
officers. Workshops for Ladies held during Plenary II were designed to provide information to chapters for more
efficiency in operation. The workshops presented were: By Laws/Legal Issues by Lady Deadre Woods Stokes,
National Parliamentarian, Can’t We All Just Get Along/Dynamics of a Chapter by National President Lady Drema
Woldman, TLOD Programs and Projects by Lady Sharon Beard, National 1st Vice President and Lady Eddie Lee
Marsh, National 2nd Vice President, Record Keeping and Minutes by Lady Kathy Lee, Area One Recording Secre-
tary and Financial Officers Information by Lady Sharon Penson, Area One Financial Secretary and Lady Hattie
Abner, Area One Treasurer. Workshop topics highlighted for Teens held during MOMENTUM presentations
included: The Art of Networking by Lady Tracy Brazil Area One Assistant TTA Advisor and the Town Hall
Town Hall Meeting.
The inaugural Town Hall Meeting planned and orchestrated by Lady Thelma Johnson, Area One Reporter/
Publicity Chair with assistance from Lady Shirley McKellar was entitled: TLOD & TTA: Take a Stand-Unmask
Bullying. Six panelists spoke about taking a stand to unmask bullying before taking questions from the Teens about
bullying, human trafficking and some other issues related to bullying by youth and adults. Panelists were:
• Teen Kiyah Kianah Smith, TTA, Lake Houston Chapter, Area One Recording Secretary, State Representative for the
national “Be Strong” Program and National “We Dine Together Program and founder of the “We Dine Together Club”
at Summer Creek High School in Humble ISD.
• Dr. Carlin Barnes, Board certified psychiatrist, Behavioral Health Medicare Director for a Fortune 500 man-
aged care company, co-author of a book on mental health entitled “Understanding Mental Illness.
