MODULE 1:
YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
9
10
Revisit Slides 7 & 8: Crew Responsibilities, and
discuss actions that could be taken to support a
friend in different scenarios. Emphasise that the
main role of the Crew is to listen, validate feelings,
encourage taking action, and communicate
support. (See: YourCrew dashboard > Resources >
A-Z > C > Crewing: Overview and Support Tips - or
use the link). For further guidance on recognising
signs that someone is struggling and how to
approach them, encourage students to watch the
RUOK video and the HRF “Asking if someone is OK
pointers video.” (15 mins)
Help-seeking Services:
Using the Worksheet: Help-seeking Services
provided have students work in pairs or small groups
to brainstorm local help seeking services. Students are
encouraged to think about where they could get help
at school, the local community and within their social/
family groups. Referring to the worksheet students are
encouraged to come up with language they could use
if a mate needed help. (20 mins)
Examples
•
This problem is too big for both of us, let’s find
someone who can help
•
That sounds hard, would you like me to come
with you to the school counsellor
•
Thanks for telling me, I know the GP is a great
place to start with getting help. Would you like
me to help make an appointment?

Shark Tank Activity:
Divide students into small groups and have them
create an awareness resource for the school community
on recognising the signs that someone might
need help. Encourage students to think creatively
and outside the box, considering how they would
effectively market their idea to the school. Once the
planning is complete, each group will present their idea
to a panel of ‘sharks’ (comprising the rest of the class
and the teacher). (40 mins)
Extension Tasks
1. Challenge students to work in pairs or small groups
to plan, script and record a short podcast episode that
demonstrates the interviewer using either sympathy,
empathy or apathy towards a guest. Direct students
to upload their podcast audio files to a central folder,
their file name containing the name of the mindset they
chose. (45-60 mins)
2. Challenge students to choose and evaluate an
episode that demonstrates each mindset, identifying
the feelings, responses and possible outcomes for each
character and commenting on the possible impact of this
conversation on the characters’ relationships. (30 mins)
