MODULE 1:
YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
Activity Four: Respectful Relationships
4.1 Consent
1
Navigating relationships/friendships during high
school can be exciting and challenging. Begin by
asking students: What factors promote or diminish
respect in relationships? Allow time for discussion and
generate a class list. (10 mins)
2
3
Introduce the concept of consent, especially if it
hasn’t been mentioned. Explain that consent is
a crucial part of all respectful relationships (not
just intimate ones), as it helps equalise power
dynamics and ensures that each person’s
boundaries are respected.
In pairs, have students come up with their own
definition of ‘consent’ and then share these definitions
with the class. (15 mins)
Display Slides 13: Consent:
Compare the class’s definitions with those on the
slide. Discuss students’ thoughts on the three key
questions provided on the slide. (10 mins)
Consent in action:
Divide the class into two rows (Row A & Row B)
facing each other. Each student pairs up with the
person opposite them. Take turns asking if they can
step closer. This continues until one person feels
uncomfortable with the proximity and chooses not to
give permission. Once everyone has found their final
spot, lead a class discussion:
•
Whose responsibility is it to ask permission?
•
How did you feel when your instruction was
•
followed?
•
Why are some pairs standing further apart than
others? (10 mins)

4
Role-Play Scenarios:
Create scenarios where students practise asking for
consent in everyday situations, such as borrowing
belongings, playing games or offering a hug.
Encourage students to use clear communication and
respect each other’s boundaries. (10 mins)
5
Consent Signals:
Discuss non-verbal ways to indicate consent or
discomfort, such as facial expressions or gestures like
a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Have students practice
using these signals in different scenarios to reinforce the
importance of understanding and respecting consent
through both verbal and non-verbal cues. (20 mins)
4.2 Boundaries
Display Slide 14: What Are Boundaries?
1
Discuss the provided definition: Boundaries are the limits
you set for the behaviour you will accept from yourself or
someone else. Explain that setting boundaries can protect
you from feeling hurt or uncomfortable, and that respecting
boundaries is a sign of true friendship. In other words, a real
friend will always respect your boundaries. (5 mins)
2
Divide the class into three groups:
Assign each group one of the following categories:
Emotional Boundaries, Physical Boundaries, or Privacy
Boundaries. Challenge each group to generate a list of
boundaries within their category. Examples might include:
saying “I don’t find comments like that funny” when
someone’s joke makes you uncomfortable, moving
away from someone who wants to hug you and saying
“That makes me feel uncomfortable”, or sharing personal
thoughts with only one person without feeling pressured

to share with everyone. Afterward, discuss examples from
each group. (20 mins)
Display Slide 15: Setting Boundaries with Friends:
Explain that while setting boundaries with friends may
feel uncomfortable, it is important for protecting your
personal wellbeing. (5 mins)
Setting Boundaries Process:
Walk students through the steps of setting boundaries,
then have them complete the Worksheet: Setting
Boundaries with Mates. Students will create a scenario
and write down what they could say or do at each step.
(15 mins)
Role Play Practice:
In pairs, have students practice conversations where
Person A is setting a boundary with Person B. This
will help them develop communication skills in real-
life situations. Explore the possible outcomes of such
conversations, referring to the Setting Boundaries
process. (15 mins)
Review Personal Boundaries: Ask students to review
their personal boundaries and, if they haven’t already
done so, add them to their Safety Plan in the YourCrew
app. This helps reinforce the importance of setting and
maintaining boundaries in their personal relationships.
