MODULE 1:
YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
Activity Three: Empathy
1
Explain that strengthening our ability to empathise
helps us to connect more deeply with others and
relate to their experiences, which is key to building
and maintaining positive relationships. By improving
our skills in listening, validating feelings, and offering
support, we become better friends and Crew
members, and can more effectively recognise when
it’s important to involve an adult. (3 mins)
2
Display Slide 11: Empathy, Sympathy and Apathy,
and explain the difference using the definitions below
or your own definitions as appropriate:
•
Empathy: Having the ability to understand another
person’s experiences from their point of view.
•
Sympathy: Caring about another person’s
feelings or experiences.
•
Apathy: A lack of feeling or concern or indifference
to the feelings and experiences of others. (10 mins)
3
Watch ‘Inside Out’ Video clip*. Lead a class
discussion about what form of communication was
used between the different characters. What was
most effective and why? (10 mins)
4
Roleplay:
Arrange students into small groups. Each group is
given one of the mindsets (Empathy, Sympathy and
Apathy). Using some of the statements listed below,
ask students to work together and come up with an
appropriate response, representing their mindset.
Allow students to share responses with the class and
lead a discussion about which response would be
most useful in real life. (20 mins)

a scenario and fill in the speech bubbles, applying the
empathy skills and strategies they have learned. (15 mins)
Recognising When a Friend Needs Support:
Explain that empathy in our relationships can be shown
by being aware of signs that something may be wrong
with a friend. Using the “Give One, Get One” strategy,
ask students to generate a list of signs that a friend might
need support or be going through a specific challenge.
