Reduction of e-waste in South Africa.
We give our recycler on average about 2.8 tonnes of e-waste per month. With our forecasted growth, we
expect to give the recycler an average of 3 tonnes of waste per month in 2021.
Items we send for downstream recycling include desktops, printers, servers, server racks, mixed e-waste,
LCD monitors, cables, docking stations CRT monitors, projectors, and other general e-waste.
Towards A Negative Carbon Footprint
Our ‘Continuous IT Lifecycle Solution’ extends the life of IT equipment from 3 to 10 years. Our service offering
helps corporate clients to dispose of their IT assets in an environmentally responsible manner.
On average about 16,32 kgCO2e is saved when refurbishing a laptop at the end of its lifecycle and 266
kgCO2e is saved when refurbishing a desktop computer at the end of its lifecycle.
About 390 litres of water is saved when a laptop is refurbished for reuse and about 6,536 Litres of water is
saved when a computer is refurbished for reuse.
On average about 0,058 kg of toxic metals are saved from re-extraction when 1 laptop is refurbished for
reuse and 0,945 kg of toxic metals are saved from re-extraction when 1 desktop is refurbished for reuse.
In the 2020/21 year we processed 9 846 desktop computers units (20% less due to COVID). We expect to
process a minimum of 20,000 desktops in 2021. A total of 19,842 laptop units were refurbished in 2020/21 (we
processed 20% less due to COVID). We expect to process a minimum of 30,000 laptop units in 2021.
Our contribution to Carbon Sequestration during the reporting period has seen us save approximately
5,465,258 kgCO2e from being emitted into the atmosphere. In 2021 we expect to save 5,809,600 kgCO2e
through our Continuous Lifecycle Solutions.
As a result, during the reporting period we have been able to save 109,5 ha of forests (136,973 trees) from
deforestation. Our projection is that in 2021 we will save 116 ha of forests (145,591 trees) from deforestation.
Pollution (Packaging Plastic)
Plastic wrapping is used in the packaging, storing, and transporting of assets. The large amounts of plastic
wrapping made from Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) are an environmental risk. We are working to actively
reduce our plastic use by changing our packaging protocols.
To counter the excessive use of plastics, we have designed special cages for the transportation of LCDs and
laptops.
We have thus far been able to save 1,2 tonnes of plastic wrapping during the reporting period. Over the next
reporting cycle, we intend to reduce our reliance on plastic and save at least 1,5 tonnes of plastic wrapping.
Our future target is to create packaging cages for storing desktops.
Water Consumption
Xperien uses water for the cleaning and washing of PCs, general sanitation, office cleaning purposes as well
as human consumption. We currently employ a water awareness strategy that is aimed at changing water
use behaviour, increasing accountability and custodianship of the resource.
