Right at that moment of total surrender I heard a
female voice chanting softly in that same strange
language I had heard Pita and his Aunty speaking …
As I closed my eyes, I once again
saw the fierce frightening face of
the walking stick (tokotoko).
It became closer and closer with its
eyes piercing right through me.
Terrified, I opened my eye.
I could still hear the chanting of what seemed to be
a strange prayer.
E tangi ana koe hine e hine. E ngenge ana koe
hine e hine. Kati to pouri ra. Noh oi te aroha te
nagahau o te matua hine ehine.
The prayer started softly, then as it became louder
and faster, the wind seemed to die down in response to
the invisible voice. As the chanting ended, I heard
ominous sounds of animals.
Though I was fearful on one level, I also felt
protected on another. I wasn’t sure if what I
experienced was real, but exhaustion finally lulled me
to sleep.
