“So, I did see her in the bush?” I blurted out, “Why
didn’t she help me?”
Aroha explained, “Yes, she was there and heard you
cry for help but just as she moved closer she heard your
karakia. She waited in the bush a little longer and then
she saw you safely exit the hole and run off. She
retrieved the berries and gave them to me”.
Aroha patiently asked me how I knew the karakia.
To which I had no answer. Without missing a beat, she
said, “Someone was with you, someone who cares
about you very deeply, maybe an ancestor.”
I was having nothing to do with ancestors or ghosts
helping me out, but Aroha calmly explained, “Things
just happen around here and it is really sort of normal.
Without responding, I continued to feverishly pack
my bag. All of a sudden, the Professor appeared and
quite sternly brought me back to reality.
He wasn’t having any of it. My leaving was not an
option as far as he was concerned. I had made a
commitment and he couldn’t understand why a little
mud would have me packing my clothes.
