felt it that dreadful morning of my mom’s accident. I
also remembered my vow to never go there again.
Uncontrollable fear, uncontrollable anger, an
unconscious surrender; whatever it was…. something
came over me and I found myself in this totally calm
and focused place. It is hard to put into words; but it
was a place of power, yet peaceful. In that space and
without conscious knowing I began to chant a karakia.
As I recited that prayer I saw the tokotoko stick with
its piercing eyes looking into my soul.
“IO, Te Matua o nga Matua,
Te Mana of nga Mana,
Ahua mai ra taku ara.
Oku matua tipuna,
rere wairua mai.
Rere mai i runga i te hau.
Kawea atu au, ki te orange.”
Divine One,
Guardian of all
Guardians,
Power of all Power,
Light my way.
All my Ancestors, fly
here in spirit
Fly here with the wind.
Carry me to safety.
