Pita admitted that he was quite impressed with my
progress and that my research seemed to be going very
well. But, of course, his family had their own methods
that were tried, true and proven over many decades to
produce award winning kumara.

His grandfather had told him the secret just
recently.

“First you have to use a tractor and rotary hoe the
land. You then dig rows and plant the kumara plants.”

The secret according to
tradition was to point
your bum to the sun,
make a hole with a stick,
pour a mug of water in the
hole, then plant the

kumara vine across the
hole and bury it.

“And, low and behold you would get

a bloody good crop every time !”
