                                                                                              When Selective Memory

                                                                                              Is a Wonderful Thing …


                                                                                     Back in mid-
                                                                                   February (was it only 2
                                                                                   weeks ago?), Carol and
                                                                                   I loaded up her SUV
                                                                                   and headed north to
                                                                                   Atlanta to visit with
                                                                                   our son Josh’s family
                                                                                   and for a little grand-
                                                                                   baby-sitting with our
                                                                                   youngest Wyatt. This
                                                                                   was really our first
                                                                                   opportunity for “quali-
                                                                                   ty” alone time with
                                                                                   him and he proved to
                                                                                   be possibly the easiest
                                                                                   of our entire grandkid brood of 2 girls and 3 boys.
                                                                                     The good thing about “grand-baby-sitting” is that one tends to blank out the
                                                                                   bad parts and only remember the good — much like childbirth (or so Carol
                                                                                   tells me.) And remarkably there were no emergency room visits, lost toddler
                                                                                   alerts or minor bumps and bruises.
                                                                                     First off, Wyatt’s a boy which means neither Carol nor I had to struggle with
                                                                                   making ponytails or putting together the perfect color-coordinated outfit for
                                                                                   Kenzie or Sophia. And whereas our 10-year-old Karter taxes my engineering
                                                                                   knowhow with complicated circuitry and computers and 6-year-old Caden
                                                                                   exhausts me physically with outdoor “monster-truck” driving and soccer prac-
                                                                                   tice, Wyatt at 18-months-old prefers blocks and playing ball with Gabby. (To be
                                                                                   honest golden doodle Gabby probably should have been getting $10 per hour
                                                                                   babysitting pay.) So with the exception of struggling to get down on the play-
                                                                                   room floor 20 times a day, we survived intact. (Memo to fitness trainers …
                                                                                   that’s the only exercise any grandparent needs to practice.)
                                                                                     And possibly the best thing at Wyatt’s age is he doesn’t communicate well
                                                                                   enough yet to rat us out — what happens with Papa Charles stays with Papa
                                                                                                   Charles. If not, I am quite sure by now the Presidential
