7. The Adverb
Read the following sentences :
(i) She will arrive very soon.
(ii) He is a very good teacher.
(iii) He hardly met me after that.
In the above sentences, the words pointed in colour are adverbs because they modify and
tell us something about a verb, an adjective or an adverb.
In sentence (i), the word very adds to the meaning of adverb 'soon'.
In sentence (ii), the word very adds to the meaning of adjective 'good'.
In sentence (iii), the word hardly modifies the verb 'met'.
An adverb is a word that tells us more about a verb, an adjective or another adverb.

1. Adverb of Manner : Adverb of manner tells us how the action takes place and answers
the question 'How'.
Examples : (i) He walked fast .
(ii) My neighbour behaves gently .
In the above sentences, 'fast' and' gently' tell us the manner in which he walked and the
neighbour behaves. Such words are called adverb of manner. Many adverbs of manner
-ly
are derived from adjectives and end in ' ' or '-ily '.
