2. Adverb of Time : Adverb of time indicate the time of an action or sometimes, the
duration of an action and answers the question 'when'.
Examples : (i) My grandfather goes for a walk early .
(ii) He returned from America yesterday .
Here, the words 'early' and 'yesterday' are adverbs of time. They are placed either at
the beginning or at the very end of a clause or a sentence.
Sometimes, a group of words (phrase) like 'at once ', 'till now ', 'by now ' also work as an
adverb. These are adverbs of time.
3. Adverb of Frequency : Adverb of frequency indicate how often or how frequently an
action takes place and answers the question 'how often'.
Examples : (i) I always go for a morning walk.
(ii) I have visited the Taj Mahal only once .
Here, 'always' and 'once' are adverbs of frequency. They are usually placed before the
main verb or after the helping verb.
4. Adverb of Place : Adverb of place tell us where or at what place an action took place. An
adverb of place answers the question ‘where’.
Examples : (i) They were going out .
(ii) The teacher looked for everywhere .
The adverbs 'out' and 'everywhere' indicate the place of action. They are adverb of
place. They are usually placed after the main verb or after the object.
5. Adverb of Degree : Adverb of degree show how much or to what extent a thing is done.
They answer the question 'how much'.
Examples : (i) He spoke quite well and won the prize.
(ii) I was extremely happy to meet my friend.
In the above sentences 'quite' and 'extremely' are adverbs of degree. They are placed
before the adjective or adverb.
