home, the entree at another, the salad at another, and the dessert at still
another. The guests, of course, may come in relays if the homes are small and
the number to be served large.
In order to add interest to the luncheon, a style show or some similar
attraction is held at the same time. At the first home there might be a showing
of house dresses by a local dress shop which specializes in garments of that
kind. At the next home sports wear and millinery might be shown, afternoon
dresses at the next, and evening dresses and wraps at another home. In each
case the models are offered for sale, and the organization receives a
commission on the sales made.
SpringGardenCarnival
T
HE open-air flower and garden sale which has become an institution in
Evanston, Illinois, is sponsored by the Garden Club of Evanston. The city
square is used for the event which lasts two or three days. Club members save
their seeds and bulbs from the preceding season and place them in envelopes
for sale. Each envelope bears the name of the person who grew the seeds.
Other club members contribute potted flowers from their greenhouses or
hotbeds. Concessions are sold to pottery manufacturers on a commission
basis, and local merchants are invited to take part and sell all sorts of garden
tools and supplies, paying a small commission for the privilege. In addition to
the spring flowers and garden accessories, there is a food booth that does a
land office business, and the usual concessions that go to make a street fair a
real event for a youngster.
