Part IV Breathe—and Thrive
fresh and open to new ideas is part of being on top of your
game.
That’s why you need to regularly exercise your mind
and your body.
Science shows, as if we even need to be told, that sit-
ting at a desk all day is not good for you. Duh! It’s not only
bad for your back, it’s not good for your head. Neither is
doing any kind of repetitive action. How can you possibly
be creative and effective as a business owner by doing the
same things in the same way from the same position every
day? You can’t. I’m not talking about your work systems
here that are required efficiencies. I’m talking about the
bigger picture—the thinking required to keep you and
your business healthy.
The importance of regularly getting up, moving and
stretching, breathing air into your lungs from a different
part of the building or neighborhood, and hydrating with
water cannot be overemphasized.

Go get a glass of water.
(You’ll have to stand up!)

Make exercising your mind and body part of your schedule.
It doesn’t happen magically, but you can find “magic” and
ease if you practice regularly. And, by the way, you should
encourage these practices with your employees. This is how
you reduce workplace stress and avoid burnout.
