The value of the links depends on the Domain Authority, relevance of the
links, and a whole range of other factors. For example, if you’re one of 100 links
on that page, this link is less beneficial to you than if you were the only link on
that page! It can get quite complex, but in summary, if you’re looking to get
links, it’s best if they’re from relevant sites with a high Domain Authority, and
from pages with a high Page Authority.
When you consistently create content that is interesting and relevant to your
niche, build shareability into your content, and develop an Alpha Audience who
will ignite your content, you’ll inevitably increase your Page Authority. People
reference great content and build on ideas all the time, so you’ll get links that
provide credibility to you by association—you’ve been “invited to the party.” In
a very real way, consistently working on the other five elements of the Content
Code should eventually raise your Google view. In addition, keep these ideas in
mind as you develop content over time:
Exceptional quality encourages conversation. This is why having a blog is
important for many businesses that depend on Google search—every blog post
represents a new page for Google to index. Each new entry also increases the
possibility of new links to your content, which contribute to the authority of your
site overall.
Have a link-building strategy. This is art as much as science! Of course, you
should aim to get links from high authority sites, but a range of links from both
high and low authority sites/pages looks more natural from Google’s
perspective. An entire industry has been built on providing link-building
strategies, and that level of detail is beyond the scope of this book. Here’s a
sampling of some common ways to earn links:
Friends help friends: Identify key influencers in your industry and get to
know them. Find ways to help them and to get on their radar screen. Over
time, it’s likely they’ll link back to you and your familiar content.
Link from high authority pages to lower ones: If you have a high
authority page on your site, linking from this page to one with a lower
authority on your same site gives it a little boost.
Actively seek out links: Although this is a time-consuming task, it does
work. Promote your content to sites that would have a good reason to link
to your content. If they don’t know of your content, they’ll never link to it!
One of the best strategies is to identify either the market leader or the
nearest competitor (if you’re the leader) and look at them in Open Site
