             GAGAN: A Major Milestone

in the Field of Air Navigation

                   AI recently successfully conducted
Flight trial using GAGAN (GPS Aided
             AGEO Augmented Navigation) based
             LPV Approach Procedures at Kishangarh
Airport, Rajasthan. The proving flight was
             to demonstrate the procedure designed
by AAI utilizing GAGAN signals for landing
purpose, without the aid of any ground-based
             infrastructure at the airport.
GAGAN is an Indian Satellite Based
Augmentation System (SBAS) jointly developed BENEFITS
by AAI and ISRO. It is the first such system • Substantial operational
developed for India and neighbouring countries benefit in poor weather
in the equatorial region. and low visibility
Further, AAI is planning to develop conditions.
GAGAN based procedures for compatible • Improved safety during
airfields, where installation of ground-based landing.
infrastructure would not be economically viable, • Reduction in fuel
to enhance the safety features for such airports. consumption, reduction
With the flight trial at Kishangarh airport, India in delays, diversions and
became the first country in Asia Pacific Region cancellations etc.
to achieve such a landmark. ■
