Women’s Preventive Care
DID YOU KNOW THAT FEDERAL HEALTH CARE REFORM HAS EXPANDED PREVENTIVE CARE
COVERAGE FOR WOMEN?
• Well-woman visits — annually to obtain the recommended preventive services and additional visits if
women and their providers determine they are necessary along with preconception and prenatal care.
• Screening for gestational diabetes — pregnant women between 24 and 28 weeks or at the first
prenatal visit for those identified at high risk.
• Human Papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing for women 30 years of age or older, every three years.
• Counseling for Sexually-Transmitted Infections (STI) — annually.
• Counseling and screening for HIV — annually.
• Contraceptive methods and counseling
– Medical coverage includes sterilization procedures along with patient education and counseling,
and services for diaphragms; implants; the insertion and/or removal of IUDs and certain
laparoscopy/hysteroscopy services.
– Pharmacy coverage includes a standard list of contraceptives based on recommendations of the
FDA Birth Control Guide, including at least one product from each method. Covered products include
diaphragms, Mirena (IUD), generic oral and emergency contraceptives.
• Breast Feeding Support, Supplies, and Counseling — Comprehensive lactation support and
counseling by a trained provider during pregnancy and/or in the postpartum period, a manual breast
pump, and breastfeeding supplies.
• Screening and Counseling for Interpersonal and Domestic Violence — annually.
