A good old man, had raised money to have his big clock repaired, but he did not manage to
get enough money. The clock stopped striking since the last war and became silent ever since.
One night, however, he woke up hearing the clock striking the hours! It was one o’clock, but
the bell struck thirteen times. He took a flashlight and went to see what was going on with the
clock. In the dark, he caught a glimpse of a man. He turned out to be his brother, Jose.
“What are you doing, Jose?” asked the old man. “I’ve come here every evening for a week to
repair your clock. I was going to surprise you,” answered Jose. “You will have given me a
surprise by the time the clock strikes one at one o’clock.”
“That’s the problem. It will strike thirteen times at one o’clock.” “It’s OK. You did a good job!”
c. Read and study the following material.
Cultural Awareness
The English tense system is always complicated to learn because it has different forms of verbs
depending on the time of action. In English, tense and aspect are two things which are
interviewed.
1. Tense refers to the time of an event-it could be: present, past, future
2. Aspects refers to the state of the event-the event could be:
in progress ( progressive or continuous aspect
completed (perfect aspect)
There are many patterns of English tenses, but that is not the most difficult part of learning
the English tense system because the patterns of the English tenses can be memorized easily.
The most difficult problem for Indonesian learners is to choose a suitable tense to describe a
certain action. Patricia Wilcox Peterson suggests four things to overcome the problem of
studying the past perfect, present perfect and future perfect tense.
1. Understanding the timeline of each tense
2. Understanding the difference between punctual verbs and durative verbs
3. Understanding the difference between frequency and end point
4. Understanding the time marker of each tense
