Trey Canard came into Toronto ready to get his season on the right track. He’s began to put some solid rounds together and then he exploded in practice in the Rogers Centre. He put his Factory Honda on the pole position after putting together two very quick qualifying sessions. Heading into the night show
Canard was confident and ready to get back to contending for main event wins.
Canard used his pole position gate pick to rocket out to the holeshot and early lead in his heat race. Despite getting off to the quick start, he had no time to relax as defending champion Ryan Dungey also got a good start and put the pressure on right away. Canard did not waiver and managed to hold off the champ for the entirety of the heat race. It was a great confidence booster for him going into the main and it kept his momentum rolling from his first place finish in qualifying.
Canard saw his bid for a perfect night (first in qualifying, first in a heat, and first in the main) dashed almost immediately. He was involved in a massive pileup in the first rhythm section getting hung up on downed riders Justin Bogle and Jason Anderson. There was simply nowhere for him to go and was forced to come to a stop for a few seconds and in the heat of the first section, those few seconds are an eternity. So after being mired in the back of the pack Canard was able to claw up to 8th place by lap 6. The race began to calm down by then and the field spread out but he was still able to get by Weston Peick for 7th at the midway point. Canard would stay charging all the way to the end and catch up to Justin Brayton but could not make a pass. He would have to settle with 7th place. A solid finish nonetheless but not what he was looking for after his dominance early in the night. Next weekend’s race is in Detroit and Canard will look to conquer the round that gave him a season ending injury just last season.
